Château-Gontier

Neighbouring our hotel is one of the major draws of Château-Gontier – the river. It passes peacefully through the town and gifts it with a water sports club, the Pierre de Coubertin pool complex and a pleasure port. You can also take a cruise to the town of Mayenne aboard the Duc de Chauvières.

If you prefer terra firma, head to the art and history museum housed in the Hotel Fouquet on Rue Jean Bourré. With sculptures and paintings from Antiquity to the modern age, you’ll love this welcoming museum. In particular, don’t miss the temporary exhibition or the collection of bronze animals from the 19th and 20th centuries. Near this charming area is the public park known as the Jardin du Bout du Monde. Located in Place Saint-Jean, it boasts a whole host of attractive features, including refreshing shady areas for warm days, and a range of changing colours and fragrances throughout the year. It is a testimony to the talents of the town’s services.   

Next, head east. Beyond the bridge that makes up part of the D28 road, turn a bit further to your right beyond the hospital and you’ll arrive at the Halle du Haut-Anjou, the town’s performing arts centre. A bit further still and keeping right is the Ursuline Convent, which is certainly worth a visit. This magnificent building from the 17th century no longer has any religious functions but instead houses three other institutions – Le Carré (a national theatre), the Conservatoire de Musique du pays de Château-Gontier (the local music conservatory) and the Office de Tourisme. At the latter, you can naturally get a host of useful information on what to see and do.
